Tanta Hamilton Bryant & Lara Mahaney | 1987 | Coronado High School State Champion Doubles Tennis Team
Tanya Hamilton Bryant and Lara Mahaney were doubles partners for the Coronado Girls’ tennis team in 1987. Together they became the first Girls’ State Champion Doubles Team in Lubbock Coronado tennis history, as well as in the history of Lubbock ISD athletics. They compiled an incredible full season record of 52-1, capped off with the state crown. Their head coach, Jim Carter, a member of the Lubbock ISD Hall of Honor, said of his dynamic duo, “Up to that time, they played the best doubles technique of any team to ever play for me. They were a dominating girls’ doubles team. They were only pushed to three sets three times the whole year. They won their first 22 matches before suffering a loss, and then won their last 30 matches in a row.” Individually, both Tanya and Lara were outstanding in their own right. Tanya was a key member of the CHS tennis team from 1984-1987. She finished her illustrious career in the spring of 1987 with a record of 166 wins and only 19 losses. She was a three-time state qualifier while at Coronado. Tanya was a state doubles alternate her sophomore year (1985). As a junior in the spring of 1986 she teamed with Ann Donnell and they were state semi-finalists, before winning the state championship with Lara in 1987. She earned Honorable Mention All-American honors by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Tanya went on to have an outstanding college career at Texas Tech, where she played for Coach Mickey Bowes. In the fall of 1988, she teamed with Cathy Carlson to win the gold medal for #2 Doubles Team in the Southwest Conference Championships. At the end of the 1988-1989 school year, Tanya was honored with the “Most Improved Player” Award for Texas Tech Tennis. That same year she was also named to the SWC All-Academic Team. Lara, who was a junior in that 1987 championship season, competed for Coronado from 1985-1988, At the end of her junior year she had recorded a record of 135 wins with only 8 losses for her first two years of Coronado tennis competition. During the 1987-1988 school year she teamed with Amy Blumrosen to again advance to the state tournament, only to lose in the finals. Lara and Amy compiled an impressive 41-2 record during their run to the state tournament. During that senior season, Lara also played singles and compiled an outstanding record of 21 wins and only 4 losses. Lara finished her high school tennis career with a tremendous record of 173 wins and only 14 losses. Because of her stellar play, Lara earned a tennis scholarship to Abilene Christian University. This girls’ doubles team of Tanya Bryant Hamilton and Lara Mahaney proved to be one of the best all-time in Lubbock ISD athletic history. They have truly set the standard for others to follow. Their work ethic and competitiveness have brought them to this point of induction into the Lubbock ISD Athletic Hall of Honor.
