2000 Coronado High School State Champion Golf Team
The 2000 Coronado Mustangs Boys Golf Team reached a level that had never been accomplished before at Coronado High School. They brought home the full team state championship for the Mustangs. This team is also the only golf team to win a state championship in the history of Lubbock ISD. Their run of success began during the fall of 1999 when they won the Haltom City High School Diamond Oaks Country Club Six Man Low Ball Team Championship. The Mustangs swept the top three places at the tournament.
The Mustangs got off to a great start in the spring of 2000 by winning the Big Spring Invitational. They followed that with a runner-up finish at the Andrews Invitational, a third place finish in the Abilene Invitational, and another team championship at the San Angelo Invitational. For the Mustangs, the District 2-5A Tournament would start them down the playoff road. Under the able leadership of Head Coach Barry Voss, the Mustangs appeared to be ready to make a great run in the playoffs. Not only did the Coronado A Team win the District 2-5A Championship, with Chad Pickering taking medalist honors, but the Coronado B Team was the runner-up in the tournament. Both the Coronado A and B Teams qualified for the regional tournament. The Coronado A Team finished the regional tournament in second Place, but that was good enough to get them to the state tournament. Eight teams competed for the title and Coronado would prove themselves as the best in the state by winning the 5A State Championship over second place Humble Kingwood by a cumulative score of 595 to 597. J.J. Killeen was the state medalist by shooting a 141, followed by Brian Smith at 148, Chad Pickering, the only junior on the team, at 153, Nick Schumacher at 154, and Jason Scherr 157. All five of the Coronado players went on to play golf at Division 1 universities. Coach Barry Voss credited the young men on the team for their great skill and effort, but Coach Voss, a longtime basketball coach, brought a true competitive spirit to the team. It all worked together to win a historical State Championship for Coronado High School and Lubbock ISD.
