Brian Jones

Class of 2024

Brian Jones | 1983 - 1986 | Dunbar High School | Football

Brian is one of the greatest athletes to compete for the Panthers. He was a standout performer in football, basketball, baseball, and track & field. But it was football that had the most impact. The success he had there has carried over today with his exceptional sports broadcasting career.

In his football career, Brian was named to the All-District, All-City, and All South Plains Teams in both his junior (1984) and senior (1985) years. He was also the Defensive Player of the Year in 1985 for the South Plains. The ultimate honor came when he was selected 1st Team All-State Linebacker in 1985. Brian was one of the top tacklers in the state that year with 148 tackles, which stands as the all time record for Dunbar Football.

In 1985, he was also named on the Texas Sports Writers All-State Team, the Adidas All-America High School Team, and the Texas High School Super Team. His stellar football career at Dunbar made Brian one of the most recruited players in the nation. He was on the 1986 Times Herald Blue Chip List, the # 9 ranked player on the Texas Top 100 list, and #6 on another poll of the Texas Top 30 Recruits. He was one of 16 linebackers listed on TSN’s Top 100 for the entire nation.

After being intensely recruited, Jones finally chose to sign a scholarship with the UCLA Bruins. Two years later, he decided to return to Texas and joined the Texas Longhorns football team. He competed for the Longhorns in 1989 and 1990. They won the Southwest Conference in 1990 and Brian was named 1st Team All-Southwest Conference as a middle linebacker.

In 1991, Brian was selected in the 8th Round by the Los Angeles Raiders.

Brian’s outstanding football career led him to his successful sports broadcasting career. He returned to Austin to complete his degree in Corporate Communication while hosting a radio talk show and serving as the sideline reporter for Longhorn football games. He would move on to Fox Sports Southwest, then to CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Radio where he hosted sports shows. In March 2013, Jones was added as an analyst on CBS Sports College Football Today. In 2017, he launched a program called the Better Man Show that is currently syndicated to more than 73 million homes.
