Chuck Johnson | 1975 - 1977 | Coronado High School | Baseball
Chuck Johnson was an outstanding two-sport athlete in baseball and football at Coronado High School from 1974-1977. As a football player, he played safety and was the place kicker. Chuck was good in football, but he excelled in baseball where he was a two-year varsity letterman.
Chuck was both an outfielder and pitcher, and he was a great high school hitter. As a senior in 1977, he maintained a .480 batting average. That season he had 47 hits, including 14 doubles and 7 triples. At the time those were school records and remained as school records for several years.
Not only was Chuck an outstanding hitter and fielder, he was also a very effective pitcher. During his senior season, Chuck compiled an 8-6 record, while pitching 94 2/3 innings. Because of his success on the baseball diamond, Chuck was named to the All-District and All-City teams. And he was the first Coronado baseball player to be named to the All-State Team.
Following his senior season, Chuck was selected to play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All Star game played in the Astrodome. Honorees are chosen by the coaches, and a school can have only one representative. Chuck was a member of the north squad which was made up of 18 players statewide from all classifications.
After graduation from Coronado, Chuck was awarded a baseball scholarship to Texas Tech University. He pitched for four years and was named Player of the Week for April 24, 1981. Chuck graduated from Tech with a degree in architecture and has remained active in that profession.
All of these great athletic accomplishments, for a man that was described by his younger brothers, J.J. and David, as not even the best street ball player during their days as kids.
