Curry Blackwell | 1983 - 1985 | Monterey | Boy's Basketball

Curry Blackwell is one of the all-time greats in Monterey Plainsmen Basketball history. In 1984, he led his team to a 24-8 record and the Area Round of the playoffs. In his senior year, Curry’s team won the District Championship and made it to the Regional Finals, finishing with an outstanding record of 30-4. The 1985 team ranks as one of the best in Monterey history.

In 1984, Curry was All-District, City MVP, All-South Plains, and All-Tournament in the Caprock Tournament. His senior season brought even more honors. He was selected as the District MVP, the City MVP, All South Plains, All-Tournament in the Caprock and Snyder Tournaments, and 1st Team All-State.
In his career at Monterey, Curry scored 1,088 points which ranks 6th in Monterey Basketball history. He also had 34 points in one game, which is 12th most at Monterey, and led his teams in steals and assists.

After graduation, Blackwell decided to stay in Lubbock and joined the basketball team at Lubbock Christian University. He had a stellar career at LCU from 1986-1989. Curry started 84 games for the Chaps and was NAIA All-District all 3 years and a 3rd Team NAIA All American. Blackwell set himself apart as one of the top players to ever play at LCU. He holds the record for most steals in a game with 8, is second in career steals with 185, is second in points per game with 20.2, is second in career points with 1,599, and is third in points scored in a game with 41.

Curry was named to the LCU All-Decade Team for the 1980’s and inducted into the LCU Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. He also was inducted in the J.T. Hutchinson Athletic Hall of Fame. Not only was Blackwell a great athlete, but he was also honored as a selection to the College Sports Information Directors Association Academic All American Third Team.

Curry was named to the LCU All-Decade Team for the 1980s and inducted into the LCU Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
