Patty Jones

Class of 2013

Patty Jones | 1976 - 2001 | Coronado High School | Volleyball

Patty Jones coached volleyball at Coronado High School from 1976 to 2001. She was the first female high school UIL coach hired by Lubbock ISD, and coached the first season of volleyball at the school after it went from being an intramural to a UIL sport.

To begin her head coaching career, Jones won six District Championships in a row, four of those after an undefeated season in district play. Throughout her tenure, Jones’s teams won 470 games and made 14 State Playoff Appearances. 52 of her players went on to play at the collegiate level.

Jones received Coach of the Year honors in 1984, 1987, 1992 and 2000. She also received special recognition by Senator Robert Duncan in October 1997 and by Mayor David Langston in December 1992. She was recognized by Texas Tech University in 2000 for being an Outstanding Teacher/Coach in Lubbock ISD. Out of all the sports in Lubbock ISD, Jones was the first coach to play music before games, have an individual banquet for volleyball, and showed videos for these banquets that she made to recount the season.

In addition to coaching, she taught physical education. Jones stayed at Coronado her entire coaching and teaching career. Through her 26 seasons, Jones never lost a game against Lubbock High School (her alma mater) and lost only once to Monterey High School.
