William Malone
Class of 2022
William Malone | 1958 – 1960 | Dunbar High School | Boy's Basketball
Many great basketball players have competed for the Dunbar Panthers through the years. One of the all-time best players was William Malone. He was a prolific shooter and scorer for the Panthers, averaging 20 points per game. In 1960, Malone was named a Co-Captain of the team and was the leading scorer in almost every game. Even with his overall basketball ability, there was another way that Malone was even more important. He inspired his teammates to give their very best every single day. With Malone’s ability and leadership, and the great coaching of Head Coach Ernest Mallory, the 1960 team would end up with a state championship in the Prairie View Interscholastic League. They defeated Houston Elmore in the 2A championship game by a final score of 74-71. Dunbar finished the year with an outstanding record of 31-2. The 1960 state championship was the third for the Panthers. They won their first basketball championship in 1953 and the 1957 team won their second. All three of those teams have been inducted into the Lubbock ISD Athletic Hall of Honor. Malone’s 1960 team was inducted in 2016. William was named to two all-tournament teams during the season and to the all district Team. He would finish his career at Dunbar by being named to the 1960 all state team. When you take great basketball ability and add it a player with a positive attitude and work ethic, you end up with William Malone. He will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats from Dunbar High School. Back to class of 2022
