2003 State Champion Tennis Team | 2003 | Coronado High School | Tennis
The 2003 Coronado Mustangs Tennis team delivered a season to remember by dominating the competition all the way to the Texas State Championship. The championship was the first in Lubbock ISD Team Tennis history.
The Mustangs were loaded with talent across boy’s and girl’s singles, doubles and mixed play and they proved to be a powerhouse on the court compiling a season record of 29 wins and only 1 defeat. That one loss was to Wichita Falls by a final of 10 to 9. The Mustangs ran through District 2-5A undefeated and in the 1-5A Regional Tournament, Coronado went 4-0 with wins over Duncanville, Grapevine, Midland Lee, and Tascosa. At the State Tournament, the Mustangs defeated Katy Taylor 10-5 in the semifinals and Plano West 10-6 for the State Championship.
Led by renowned coach Jim Carter, a member of the 2011 Inaugural Class of the Hall of Honor, the Mustangs were well prepared and ready to compete each match. Along with assistant coach Melvin Houston, another member of the Hall of Honor, the team was made up of 18 players. The boy’s team included Kurt Pessa, Jay Wofford, Craig Spearman, Jeremy Reed, Anthony Cooper, Kyle Haynes, Jim Blacketer, Brent Hilliard, Brian Byrne, and Will Wilkerson. For the girl’s team it was Ame Blacketer, Lane Holder, Kelsy Garland, Natalie Day, Carolyn Key, Keely Garland, Jill Wright, and Ashley Stallings.
Coronado Tennis had long been known for tennis excellence. There had been individual and doubles teams that secured state titles, but the 2003 team title marked a milestone in Coronado Tennis history. It required the whole group to pull together and play as one for a common goal of a team championship. The 2003 Team State Championship raised the standard even higher for the proud Coronado program. This is a team that will be remembered for their dedication, competitive spirit, and accomplishing what no other Lubbock ISD tennis team had ever done before.
