Mindy Sullivan Mammen | 2000 – 2002 | Coronado High School | Track, Cross Country
Mindy didn’t arrive at Coronado until her junior year in the fall of 2000. Everyone associated with Coronado track and cross country was glad that she ended up a Mustang. She began her running career as a freshman at Colorado City before moving to El Paso’s Franklin High School for her sophomore year. Mindy had an immediate impact at Coronado. During her junior year, she placed first at the district cross country meet and led her team to the team title. At the regional meet, Mindy placed third and the team upset Flower Mound Marcus for the championship. At the state meet she finished 6th overall. That effort boosted the Mustangs to fourth place in the state. The 2001 track season brought more success for Sullivan Mammen. She went undefeated for the season in the 800 Meter Run. That took her all the way to the state meet where she claimed the state title and broke the state record with a time of 2:08.38. She also anchored the 4 x 400 relay to a regional championship and an eighth place finish at the state meet. At the end of the season, Mindy was ranked #2 in the country in the 800 meters. Her senior year in cross country brought another district championship and a second place finish in region. The regional meet qualified Mindy for the state cross country meet, where she won the championship in a state record time of 10:43.8. In Mindy’s senior track season, she was sidelined for most of the year with an injury. However, she was able to get back in time to defend her district and state titles in the 800. Mindy won the 2002 state title in the 800 meters, and had now won back-to-back state titles in the event. After her senior season, Mindy signed a scholarship with the University of Tennessee. Running on the cross country team, Sullivan Mammen led the team to SEC Championships in 2003, 2004, and 2005. She was an All SEC selection in 2003. The Vols won the National Cross Country title in 2004, with an NCAA record in the event. Mindy continued to run during graduate school and after, until an injury in 2012 ended her pursuits in track and cross country. Mindy was a champion in every sense of the word.
