1960 Dunbar High School State Champion Boys’ Basketball Team

In 1960 the Dunbar High School Boys Basketball Team won their third state championship in the Prairie View Interscholastic League with a season record of 31-2.The panthers won 15 consecutive games to start the season before losing in overtime 63-60 to Odessa Blackshear. Dunbar then won 11 in a row before dropping a district matchup to Amarillo Carver. Dunbar entered the playoffs with a record of 29-2. They typically outscored opponents 70 to 48.1 points per game.In the state tournament, the Panthers defeated Edwards High School from Gonzales in the semi-finals, going on to claim the AA Prairie View Interscholastic League crown with a win over Houston Elmore.

William Malone was named to the All-Tournament team, and was also named first team All-District. He led the Panthers in scoring with a 19.6 points per game average. Robert Scott, Johnny Johnson, and Robert Dreary were named Second-Team All-District. Collectively, the Panthers scored 2,310 points over the season. They had a 45.7% field goal percentage, and a 58.5% free throw percentage. Eight individual players scored 100 or more points on the season.
