1975 Coronado 4A State Champion Boys Doubles Team – Tennis

Class of 2016

1975 Coronado 4A State Champion Boys Doubles Team – Tennis | Tennis

In 1975 Doug Davis and Charles Key won the first boys tennis state championship for Lubbock ISD in the 4A Boys Doubles State Championship. This was also the first state championship win for Coronado High School in any sport. Leading up to this win, both Davis and Key had exceptional high school tennis careers. From 1972 to 1975, Davis played at the number 1 position on the team ladder, and Key played at the number 2 position.During their junior year, Davis and Key were paired together for the first time as a doubles team. That year they won the district doubles championship. Before the regional tournament, Key became ill and was unable to play. Sophomore Art Anderson took his place, and together he and Davis won the regional tournament. They would later place third in the state tournament. During the 1974-75 school year, seniors Davis and Key were back together again, going undefeated as a doubles team. They compiled a record of 17-0 on their road to winning the 1975 state championship.Davis and Key accumulated a record number of wins in the three years they participated in UIL tennis competition (freshmen were not eligible to play at this time). Davis compiled a record of 196 wins and 28 losses (doubles and singles combined), and Key’s record finished at 167 wins and 42 losses in combined play.

Davis still ranks third in career singles wins at Coronado (100 wins), and Key still ranks fourth in doubles wins (119 wins).
