Dick Lowrey

Class of 2016

Dick Lowrey | 1951-1952 | Lubbock High School | Football

Dick Lowrey played on the 1951 and 1952 Lubbock High School State Champion Football Teams. He played both offensive guard and linebacker for the team, making Second-Team All-District his junior year, and First-Team All-District as a senior. From the fourth grade at Dupre Elementary, to the end of his high school career, teams Lowrey played on lost only two games. His high school coach, Pat Pattison said “Dicky was the best offensive guard I had during my time as a coach at LHS.”

After high school, Lowrey received a football scholarship to the University of Texas where he again played both offensive guard and inside linebacker.

Lowrey returned to Lubbock after college and became head coach of Atkins Junior High School’s football team. He was also an assistant and later head coach at both J.T. Hutchinson and McKenzie Junior High Schools. Lowrey spent 37 years as both a coach and a math teacher in the Lubbock area.

He is the son of E.J. “Pinky” Lowrey, former coach and later business manager for Lubbock ISD. Lowrey Field is named in his honor.
