Curtis Gipson
Class of 2013
Curtis Gipson | 1962 - 1971 | Dunbar High School
Curtis Gipson was the head basketball coach at Dunbar High School from 1962 to 1971. Before Dunbar, Gipson coached at Evans School in Slaton from 1957 to 1962.
During his tenure at Dunbar he had a record of 248 wins and 55 losses. Dunbar was the 1-3A State Champion in 1965 in the Prairie View Interscholastic League. The PVIL merged with the University Interscholastic League in 1967 and Dunbar was State Championship Runner-Up in 1968. Gipson was named District Coach of the Year three times, as well as receiving several other city awards.
Coincidentally, Gipson was on Dunbar’s first state championship basketball team in 1953, and coached the last state championship team before the school’s closing. In addition to coaching, Gipson was a social studies and history teacher at Dunbar. Gipson went on to serve as an Assistant Principal and Principal in Lubbock ISD from 1971 to 1993.
