Ron Reeves

Ron Reeves | 1975 - 1978 | Monterey High School | Football

Ron Reeves played football and baseball at Monterey High School from 1975 to 1978. He started on the football team for three years. His sophomore year he was a middle linebacker and lead the team in tackles.

Reeves moved to the position of starting quarterback for his junior and senior years. In the 1976 season, Reeves and his team went 13-1 on the season and made it to the State Semi-finals. In 1977 the team went 11-1 and reached the quarter finals in the playoffs.

Reeves was City player of the year in 1977 and 2nd team All-State. He was the quarterback in both the THSCA All-Star Game and the Oil Bowl. Reeves was the pitcher on the Monterey Baseball Team and was City Player of the year and an All-State pitcher on the 1978 team that was the State Championship Runner-up. Reeves also played in the THSBCA All-Star game. He had the highest winning percentage of all time at Monterey with 30-3, or 90.99%.

Reeves was drafted to play baseball for the Cleveland Indians, but chose instead to accept a scholarship to play football at Texas Tech. He was the starting quarterback there for four years. He was selected as the SWC Newcomer of the Year his freshman year and was the 2nd team All-Conference quarterback, a position he was selected for again in 1980. In 1981, Reeves received the SWC Sportsmanship Award and the Dell Morgan Courage Award. Upon graduating from Texas Tech he held all the career passing and total offense records at Tech.

In 1982, Reeves was drafted in the 10th round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers. After that, Reeves played in the Canadian Football League and the United States Football League from 1983 to 1985. In 2007, Reeves was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Honor.
