John Dudley

John Dudley coached baseball and football in Lubbock ISD from 1966 to 2004. He began his coaching career in 1966 at Atkins Junior High School.

After a year there, he moved to his alma mater, Monterey High School, where he was an assistant baseball coach and junior varsity football coach. In 1973, Dudley accepted the head baseball coach position at Coronado High School, where he would spend the rest of his career.

During his tenure as a baseball coach (1973-2002), Coronado went to the playoffs 13 times, with the 1995 team taking the title of runners-up at the Class 5A State Tournament. The 1995 team was also the first and only team to go undefeated during district play. While coaching, Dudley taught U.S. History at Coronado and was heavily involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which he was a huddle sponsor of from 1970 to 2004.

He was a member of the original Board of Directors of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, serving as Director of Region I from 1975 to 1977 and Secretary-Treasurer from 1980 to 1982. He coached the north squad in the THSBCA All Star Game in 1994.

At Coronado, Dudley was also actively involved in the process of securing and designing the first true “home field” for the baseball team in 1987, O’Banion Field. In addition to baseball, Dudley assisted the football team at Coronado as a linebacker coach. Dudley’s coaching accolades include being inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999, being honored as a “Coach That Makes a Difference” by Fox Sports Southwest Network , High School Xtra Division in 2002, and he was awarded the Kal Segrist Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to West Texas Baseball in 2003.

Also during his career, Dudley was honored as district or city “Coach of the Year” eight times. Dudley was an influential teacher of U.S. History at Coronado as well, honored as a “Teach You Can Count On” by KCBD-TV in fall 2002 and as “Secondary Social Studies Teacher of the Year” by the Staked Plains Council for the Social Studies in 2003.
