Biography
Athletic trainers naturally cross paths with every sport, coach, and student-athlete on a campus, but those who had the opportunity to work alongside Anthony Peppers were truly blessed. Remembered as the consummate professional, “Coach Pep” dedicated his life to taking care of his athletes. His journey began as a student trainer under Bob Ramos at Dunbar High School, serving in that role until his graduation in 1975—a humble beginning to a career that would ultimately see both mentor and student enter the Lubbock ISD Athletic Hall of Honor together.
Anthony headed to Texas Tech to earn his college degree and served as a student trainer for Texas Tech Athletics for six years. He then joined Lubbock ISD as the assistant trainer at the Central Training Room under Hall of Honor Member Greg Lowrance. He taught physical education and health at Whiteside Elementary, Rush Elementary, J.T. Hutchinson Junior High, and Lubbock High. In 1998, “Coach Pep” became the Head Athletic Trainer at Lubbock High School. He would serve in that role until his passing on January 22, 2026, at the age of 67.
Anthony could fix almost anything with some ice and athletic tape, but his focus was the health and safety of his athletes under his care.
In 1993, Peppers received the Ken Locker Award at the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association annual symposium. This award goes to trainers who have made significant contributions to the profession. In 2002, he was presented the Everett Blackburn Memorial Award for Athletic Training for serving and inspiring others in the athletic training profession.
The impact of Coach Pep cannot be measured. His influence and expertise have changed lives for the athletes, families, and schools he has served. He served Lubbock ISD for 43 years. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and inspired during his magnificent career.
