While some rare athletes possess the unique gift to excel across multiple sports, Mac Taylor truly did it all during his time at Lubbock High School from 1948 to 1950. A phenomenal multi-sport athlete, Taylor earned the rare distinction of being a three-year letterman in football, basketball, baseball, and track—a testament to his incredible athletic ability, tenacity, and dedication. Yet, among the four sports he mastered, football stood out above the rest. It was a golden era to be a Westerner, and Taylor found himself at the heart of a highly successful Lubbock High football program.

Taylor's 1950 football team advanced deep in the playoffs before losing to the eventual State Champion, Wichita Falls. The Westerners would claim the State Championship the next year in 1951 and again in 1952.

Mac was named to the 1950 AP All-State Team and to the National High School All-American Team. He was a unanimous selection to the All-District Team in 1950. The recognition and awards just kept coming for Taylor. He was on the All-Southern Football Honor Squad and received Honorable Mention for the Most Outstanding Player in the entire state of Texas.

His exceptional football talent earned him invites to play in the All-American All-Star, the All-State All-Star Game, the Oil Bowl Game, the Permian Bowl Game, and the Greenbelt Bowl Game.

Mac would go on to play college football at Rice University. During his time there, the Owls shared the 1953 Southwest Conference Championship with the University of Texas.

Taylor was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but chose not to play professional football in the NFL.

At a time in Lubbock High history when there were numerous talented athletes and football players, Taylor stood out as one of the greatest to ever play for the Westerners and for Lubbock ISD.
