Matt Miller | 1991–1993 | Monterey High School | Baseball
Miller played baseball and basketball for the Plainsmen, but he would become a star because of his baseball career.
In 1993, his senior season, Matt was 12-2 with a 1.05 ERA and led the team to a 29-4 record and the District Championship. He was named MVP of the All-City Team, the All-District Team, and the All-Region Team. He was selected to the All-State Team.
He was selected to play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association game in the Astrodome. Later in the summer of 1993, Matt was invited to play in the National High School All-Star Game in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Miller was drafted in the 5th round by the Chicago Cubs in the 1993 MLB Draft, but he didn’t sign. Instead, Matt elected to accept a scholarship to play baseball for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
In 1996, Texas Tech’s Miller was named to the All-Southwest Conference and All-American teams. He left Tech as the leader in wins in a season with 12 and career wins with 25.
Miller was once again selected in the MLB Draft. This time it was in the 2nd Round by the Detroit Tigers. He played 8 seasons in the Tigers organization.
In the final 2 seasons, he played for the Major League Club. Matt made his MLB debut on May 8, 2001.
