Mark Griffin | 1971 - 1972 | Monterey High School | Baseball
Mark began his high school athletic career at Lubbock High, playing football and baseball from 1969-1971. In 1972, he transferred to Monterey, where he played baseball for the legendary coach Bobby Moegle.
In 1972, The Plainsmen finished with a 14-1 district record and another District Championship. They defeated Amarillo Tascosa, El Paso Burges, and Abilene High in the playoffs to reach the State Tournament. They won the semi-final game to set up a rematch with Houston Bellaire in the finals. Bellaire had beaten Monterey by 1 run in the 1971 Championship Game. The score was 1-1 going into the top of the seventh inning with Monterey batting. Mark came to the plate facing the Bellaire ace Jim Gideon. Griffin laced a triple to score Tommy McIntyre and give Monterey a 2-1 lead. Monterey held off Bellaire in the bottom of the seventh to win their first State Championship in baseball. Mark was named to both the All-District and All-State teams that spring.
Mark’s journey continued at the University of Texas. In 1975, UT was vying for a National Championship at the College World Series. Just as he did in the high school State Championship game, he delivered the game-winning hit, this time against South Carolina. His contribution was instrumental in giving the University of Texas the 1975 National Collegiate Baseball Championship.
Mark went on get his undergraduate degree from UT in 1976, and his law degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law in 1979. He was later inducted into the J.T. Hutchinson Junior High Hall of Honor. He currently heads up the Griffin Companies and is the chairman of the Texas Tech Board of Regents.
