Victor Hicks | 1971 - 1975 | Estacado High School | Football
Victor Hicks was a gifted athlete who earned varsity letters in three different sports at Estacado High School (football, basketball, and track). But the sport he really excelled in was football. He attended Estacado High School from 1971 to 1975, competing on the sub-varsity level his freshman year in 1971.
The coaches at Estacado knew they had something special with Victor. He was elevated to the varsity as a sophomore in 1972. As it turned out, Hicks would be named the MVP of the football team at the end of his sophomore year.
Victor’s junior year (1973) brought even more success. Playing tight end, he was the city’s leading receiver with 19 catches for 381 yards and four touchdowns. He was named All-District, All-City, and All-South Plains that year.
Victor was injured for most of his senior year, and as a running back he gained only 146 yards on 36 carries from his halfback position. Despite the setback due to injury, he and center, Joe Burrow, were honored as two of the nation’s top 100 schoolboy football players in 1974 by Coach and Athlete magazine. Both players were listed as Prep All- Americans by the magazine which got it’s nominations from high school coaches from across the nation.
He started as a freshman tight end at OU and ended up as a four-year letterman for the Sooners from 1975-1979.
He started as a freshman at tight end at Oklahoma and ended up four-year letterman for the Sooners from 1975-1979. During that time OU won four Big 8 championships, and two National Championships (1975 and 1978) with Victor starting at tight end. OU also won three bowl games while he played: the Orange Bowl in 1976, the Fiesta Bowl in 1977, and the Orange Bowl again in 1978.
After finishing his career at Oklahoma, Victor was drafted in the 5th round of the 1979 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. That year, the Rams went on to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIV.
